Ilanalel which has a spiritual message; "!fhe Creation" by Joseph Haydn which is a beautiful namatil'e, and "Elijah" by Felix 1\{endelssohn, best described as "an opera without acting." The life of the gre-atest and sternest of prophets is picturetl iD music,..in which the dramatic €lement has overshaalovred 'all other' consid.erat ions. The text throughout is scril:,tural and the nrusical mood refiects the words with rernarkal:le accurac-\r, dramatic intensity yielding only to lyric beauty in those portions which deal srith great spiritual truth or consolation. First conceived in 1836, ttr v"'orli was not begun until 1845, the music being set to German words furnishecl by Julius Schubrino, the })nglish text being selected by Witliam }Jartholomet' and suppliecl throush correspondence as the corrr-poser worked. tr'irst performed at Birmingham, En-gland, in English on August 26th, 1846, the trio "Lift Thine Eyes" and last chorus were added; and as non' known the oratorio was given at ]trxeter Hall, April 16th, 1847, and at Hamirurg" Germany, Oct. ?th, 184?.
