Title | Forest management plan Flathead Indian Reservation, Montana : plan period 1-1-72 - 12-31-81 |
Description | The forest within the Flathead Indian Reservation is in a transition from extensive to intensive management, i.e., from salvaging mortality and imminent mortality (initial cut) to manipulation of stand stocking towards the desirable level of growing stock (second and third harvest cuts and pre-commercial thinning). The forest has been divided into five management units: the Hot Springs unit, the Irvine unit, the Mission Range unit, the Jocko unit, and the Dixon unit. The forest management plan provides a detailed description (including multiple use aspects) and analysis of the forest resource for each of the five management units along with alternatives from which the Tribes can select or merely consider. Also included are such topics as forest regulation, silvicultural prescriptions, supporting data (economic analysis, soils and geology, etc.) and an action plan, which outlines the course of action for the 1972-1981 plan period. Because many items in the action plan are of paramount concern to the Tribes, such sections as forest development, logging roads, logging methods and permits contain viable alternatives for Tribal Council consideration. The forest management plan is not a directive but a flexible guideline that can be revised or changed with minor adjustments so as to comply with tribal desires or changing time. An addendum to the forest management plan showing a reduction in the forest land base and the Reservation annual cut that was enacted by the Tribal Council of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes in September 1975 is included. |

Description | Construction began on the Blackfeet Irrigation Project on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in 1908 and continued to 1916 when four of the six units were partially completed. This study and report review the partial development of the irrigation project, analyze the present agricultural situation, and determine the probable future economic capability of the project lands under irrigation. The report focuses on two primary aspects of the development, (1) an analysis of agricultural production and the organization of farms in the present situation, and (2) the agricultural potential under full irrigation. The analysis necessarily is based on information presently available and may require modification when detailed land classification and adequate knowledge of irrigation and drainage requirements are available. |
