Alfred Kaschube was Master of Ceremonies. Pastor Tom Whiteman of First Lutheran gave the meal blessing. The group enjoyed piano music by Jim Mann and a Slng-A-Long led by Lucille Olson, Culbertson, and Jackie Schenkenberg. Wolf Point. Lucille narrated wh le She re n a Rigs by and David Brockmeyer waltzed and the group reminisced with songs of "yesteryear." Mothers were honored too as Bea Jensen portrayed "Mother" rocking and reading. Lori Edlger sang "Wind Beneath My Wings" and "except for Monday." Receiving plaques and flowers were Beluah Waller, Roosevelt County Senior Citizen of the Year. Edward "Nute" Anklam Culbertson Senior Citizen of the Year. Alma Bertelsen, Frold Senior of the Year and Ellis Red" Thorsen, Wolf Point Senior of the Year. Master of Ceremonies, Al Kaschube, who Is retiring December, 1992. from his post as County Commissioner and President of the County Council on Aging also received a plaque for 16 years of service on the Council and for sharing his musical talent with seniors throughout the years. The Star Quilt raffle by Council on Aging drawn for at the banquet was won by Doris Trtplett, Frold. The Faith Home Foundation Board prepared and served punch and coat on pg S Spotted Knapweed is a Threat to Montana Rangeland Spotted Knapweed (Centaurea Maculosa) threatens the long term productivity of Montana's rangelands, infesting over 4.5 million acres. At it's present rate of Infestation if allowed to continue. It will cost range and livestock 155 million dollars annually. Tills weed is a short lived perennial fori). Seedlings over-winter In the rossette stage and resume growth In early April. Most of the stem growth Is In June. Stem height varies from two feet to four feet depending on the location and moisture. Each stem has many bracts and single pink-purple colored flowers at the tips. Each flower head has bracts that are marked with fine verticle streaks and tipped with a dark comb-like fringe. Spotted Knapweed blooms between July and August. Individual flower heads bloom for two to six days before the bracts close. The bracts reopen after about 20 days when seeds are dispersed. A single plant can produce up to 18,000 seeds. Knapweed can retain seed In mature flower heads and It Is has the capacity to tumble long distances and invade new acres. Mature plants can be transplanted hundreds of miles away by recreational and off road vehicles. Seed can be viable In the soli for up to 8 years. Early detection of knapweed Is the best prevention and early treatment of small Infestations will possibly eliminate knapweed growth. Tree Fabric Demonstration The Roosevelt County Soil Conservation District and the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks la sponsoring a demonstration of the tree fabric layer and the District's new tree weeder on the Jan Peters' farm 7 miles north of Culbertson on highway 16, Just past the McCabe turnoff. The building will be a great asset to Poplar. Logo Design Contest The Northern Montana College Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) Is conducting a logo design contest open to all area artists. The winner will receive $100. Deadline for entries is June 19, 1992. In an effort to achieve community recognition, the EOC is searching for a symbol that reflects both the cultural and gender diversity of the clients we serve. The availability of educational opportunities and assistance in goal attainment should be expressed in the spirit of the design. The EOC logo will be incorporated in the program's publications, posters and correspondence. Designs must be black and white submitted on an 8 1/2 inch by 11 inch format. The design must have the ability to be reduced with great clarity to a minimum of one Inch by one Inch. The words "Educational Opportunity Center" at "EOC" may be Included In the design but are not a requirement. All entries become the property of the EOC. The EOC program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. All EOC programs provide services which will help adults who are low-Income and first generation college bound continue their education. The NMC EOC program services a seventeen-county region of northern Montana. Outreach counselors have effects at Fort Peck Community College, Fort Belknap College. Stone Child Community College. Northern Montana College in Havre and Great Falls, Blackfeet Community College and Flathead Valley Community College.
