Mr. S.W.Allen,
Sec'y, Allen Sheep-Shearing Machine Co.. Chicago, Ills.
Dear Sir:
Since shearing our sheep I have
taken some pains to arrive at tin-
relative merits of shearing sheer*
with your Machines as against hand
shearing, and find a great saving n<
favor of your moehincs. First. I*
the extra amount of wool secured
estimated at from one-half to »
pound of wool. Second, in leaving
! the sheep free of cuts and having no
i second cuts in the wool. Your
! machines gave excellent satisfaction,
did good work*, no breakage and but
little wear.
Yours truly.

With fall came the "fattening time"
for the hogs. They Were then brongbt
hi from the distant fields, where they,
bud passed the summer, and put in a
peu by the Bide of ytbe road. Aud, although within. ten; feet of the soldiera
as tbey inarched by, they were never
seen, for the pen was completely covered by the winter's wood pile, except at
the .back, where .there was a board
fence through whose'' cracks the corn
was thrown in. Whenever the passing
advance guard told us tbat an army
was approaching the hogs were hurriedly fed, so that the array might go
by while tbey were taking their after
dinner nap and thus not reveal their
presence by an escaped grunt or squeal.
Fortunately the house was situated i*
% narrow valley, where the, opportunities for bushwhacking were so great
that the soldiers' did not tarry long
enough to search suspected wood piles.
On one occueiou tn ♦hongut the hogl
doomed. A wagoii bin' e down near the
house, nnd the soldier went to the
wood pile torn pole to be used in mending the break Luckily he found a stick
to his liking without tearing the pile
to pieces This suggested tbat some nice,

The folio wine story was told by Ma*
jor Aleusis of a Vincenues lawyer who
appeared for the defcudaut in a trial by
jury aud put on the witness stand a boy
from whoso testimony be expected to
gain a great deal To the confusion of
the attorney, the story told by the boy
was greatly to the detriment of the defendant, aud the attorney set to work to
show tbat tbu boy was "worthless." '
>mVbat i.vyonr occupation?" he asked
the boy \
"1 worfc on thy father's farm." the
witness replied. ••
"You don't do much hut sit around,
do you?"
" Wedi, i help my father."
y "Cut you're worthless, aren't you?'
was the-attoruey'a decisive question.
"1 don't know whether i am or not,'
retorted the, witness warmly
Then the attorney took another tack.
"Your father's a worthless man. isn't
be?"
"Well, Ae works about the farm."
The attorney here fastened an eye
which gleamed with triumph on the
jury and nailed the boy with a glance
from the other and said, "Isn't it true
tbat your father doesn't do euough work
to prevent his beiug called worthless?'
The boy had chafed under these unpleasant questions, and, summoning his
courage, he said loudly: "If you want
to kuow so bad whether my father's
worthless, ask him There he in un the
