CLYDE GORE OH 253 Montana Historical Society Montanans At Work Oral History Project TAPE 1 SIDE A 0 to 5 minutes Born March 12, 1905. Relates why people came to Montana from Nebraska ( his origin). Remembers trip to Montana on wagon. 5 to 10 minutes Father built log house. Homestead in Fergus County; land not suited to farming but homesteaders who came had only farming backgrounds. Reason many of them left. Father bought place south of Lewistown, 1918. Missed school due to illnesses, graduated in 1924. 10 to 15 minutes Many people from Nebraska. Chores he had to do as child. Describes school he and four siblings attended. Describes movement of people in area; explains why they moved. 15 minutes to 20 minutes Land sale. Tells why people came in and then left; changing values of land. Relates operation of homestead; raised livestock, garden and crops. Describes how father trusted the judgment of bankers regarding farming techniques. Tells what happened when father used advice given by bankers and almost went broke. 20 to 30 minutes Relates soup lines in big cities; never saw such a thing during Depression in towns in Montana. Tells what did on ranches. Stacking hay as opposed to baling it. Describes other duties on ranch.
