The eldest child of Frederick Billings and Julia Parmly, Parmly Billings grew up the son of a wealthy capitalist, attending the finest schools, traveling to Europe, and being coerced by his father to settle in Billings, Montana Territory in 1884. Edward Bailey, his cousin, and Parmly ranched in the Judith Basin. He lived in Billings off and on for about four years. He died in May of 1888 on a return trip to his home of Woodstock, Vermont. He died of uremic poisoning, likely stemming from a childhood illness. He was 25 when he died. His letters from Billings are housed at the Billings Farm & Museum archives in Woodstock, Vermont.
