INTERVIEW
with
ARNOLD NELSON
November 23, 1983
This is Anna Zellick interviewing Arnold Nelson at his lovely home at
316 eleventh Avenue Nolih. Our reason for interviewing Arnold is that he is
a son of a pioneer carpenter and builder who came here in 1910. We will know
more about his distinguished father through this interview. Arnie, you said
that your father came here in 1910. What was his full name, and where did he
come from?
Nelson: His name was Peter Martin Nelson and he came here in 1910. He came to
the United States in 1907 and first went to the Iron Range at Coleraine, Minnesota.
He was there for three years around Coleraine and Hibbing and then he
came to Lewistown.
Zelick: Where did he come from in Norway?
Nelson: He came from an island above the Arctic Circle, called Bolga Island. This was
the location of a small fishing village, where my father lived. Some miles nmih of there,
on the mainland, is the city of Bodo.
Zellick: All right, he came from Bolga Island, Norway. How did it happen
that your father came here to Lewistown?
Nelson: He was sent here by the Goodrich Call Lumber Company. It was down on
First Avenue and about Virginia.
Zellick: I haven't heard about this company before. Was it a large company?
Nelson: It was quite a large company at that time.
Zellick: Was it before the Montana Lumber Company? It wasn't was it?
Nelson: Oh yes, it was. The Montana Lumber Co. was formed about that time,
but a little bit later.
Zellick: So this Goodrich Call Lumber Co. was a big outfit. It needed carpenters,
plasterers, and tradesmen in the building trade. So the company sent word out.
Nelson: Yes, my father brought another plasterer, named Ellingson and a carpenter
named BUli Bntre with him.
Zellick: Your father was a plasterer rather than a carpenter?
