Rebecca Helen Rixon Bates 82, pioneer Billings resident, died in an Oakland, California in November, 1952. Mrs. Bates, known to early Billings residents as ""Becca"" Rixon, was born August 10, 1870 at Milton, Ontario, Canada, a daughter of John and Susanna Rixon. She was married to Lesley Bates in California on September 3, 1885. See Pioneer Resident Of Billings Dies, Billings Gazette, November 16, 1952. Lesley Bates: He opened the first insurance office in Billings in 1882. A member of the Maverick Hose Fire Company. They were residents of the San Francisco region since 1889. He founded the Standard Forms Bureau, which kept insurance company statistics, in San Francisco. Survivors in 1953, were five sons, including Major Norman Bates, U.S. Marine Corps, retired; Prof. Leslie Rixon Bates at the University of California at Los Angeles and Adm. Dick Bates, who won the Congressional Medal of Honor as a member of Gen. Nimitz' staff in World War II. |
