James Goss was born in New York City, April 17, 1848. A Civil War Veteran, James R. Goss, came to Coulson and Billings in 1882. Married Feb. 17, 1878 (or 1879), while In Michigan, to Miss Florence E. Lord. He served as Yellowstone County Attorney and Billings second Mayor (1887). See Three Pioneer Lawyers, Billings Gazette, November 16, 1939, p. 14. See Montana, Its Story and Biography by Stout. Judge of probate court during Territorial days (before 1889). President of the Yellowstone Bar Association. Helped start Billings Polytechnic Institute and Parmly Billings Library.
