Polson's namesake was pioneer rancher David Polson, born in 1834 in New Haven, Connecticut. The exact date he and his wife, Mary Kane, arrived in the Polson area is unknown. Rancher Billy Irvine felt it was 1865. David Polson was said to have had a hospitable nature, to have played the fiddle, and led an orchestra that played for dances as far away as Missoula and Frenchtown.
