Peterson Joins Distinguished
Group of Executives Who Head
Up State Higher Institutions
Dr. Davis
Dr. Davis is president of the
Montana State Normal College at
Dillon, having served in that ca-pacity
since 1919 He is the dean
of the presidents of the State's
higher institutions and serves as
president of the executive council
composed of the six presidents. He
received his doctorate from Co-lumbia
in 1917. His writings have
given him a national reputation.
President McCain
President McCain, as head of
the Montana State University at
Missoula, is the youngest of the
State's presidents. He was inaug-urated
Dec. 17, 1945. A Master of
Arts from Duke University, he
has studied toward the doctorate
at Stanford University. He came
directly to the State University
from the U. S. Navy, where he
was personnel officer.
College at Ypsilanti in 1926 and
served as a member of the faculty
at that institution from 1924 to
1928. From 1931 to 1945 he was
on the faculty of the New York
State Teachers College at Platts-burgh,
coming to Billings from
that institution. He holds the
earned degrees of M.A. and Ph. D.
from Columbia University, New
York City. Dr. and Mrs. Peterson
make their home on Rimrock
Road, when not on good will tours
over the state.

ALL GOOD FRIENDS
The six presidents pictured on
this page have the reputation for
working together with a remark-able
degree of cooperation. Each
is, naturally, looking after the in-terests
of his own institution but
each, in turn, never loses sight of
the needs of the State in general.
They have learned, as all educat-ed
men must eventually, that it
is possible and desirable to main-tain
personal friendships despite
temporary disagreements.
President Renne
President Renne was inaugur-ated
as president of Montana
State College at Bozeman on July
9, 1945, having completed 2 years
as chief executive there. He holds
the degree of Doctor of Philoso-phy
from the University of Wis-consin.
Dr. A. G. Peterson, president-in-
fact of the Eastern Montana
State Normal School since July 9,
1945, now becomes president-in-effect
as well, with the completion
of inaugural ceremonies of this
date, and will be fully accepted as
one of six distinguished execu-tives
who man the ivy towers of
the State's higher institutions of
learning.
Born in Michigan in 1898, Dr.
Peterson was graduated from the
Eastern Michigan State Normal
Mansfield and D'Ewart Send

Dr. Francis A. Thomson
President, since 1928, of the
Montana School of Mines at
Butte. He holds the degree of
Doctor of Science, 1923, from the
Colorado School of Mines. Like
Dr. Davis, he is nationally known
in college administration.

WE ASK YOUR INDULGENCE
We ask your indulgence in looking over the forty
pictures presented in this issue. Some of them in no
wise do their subjects justice. Some folks do not take
a good picture. If they did, they probably would have
been in Hollywood long ago. But these are all hand-some
individuals in real life. See if you can identify
them from the pictures. See what we mean?
The college gymnasium, scene of many a hard-fought basket-ball
game, also serves as an auditorium for student and public
gatherings. The annex on the left houses the dramatic arts work-shop
and practice rooms for piano students. Eventually, it is
hoped that a physical education plant can be built, thus making
it possible to use the present gymnasium as an auditorium only,
with a raised floor and permanent seats.
A quick shot of some of the winter quarter student group, to-gether
with a few faculty members, taken between classes on the
front steps of the administration building. In this group are several
returned servicemen and one service woman. Other GI's are not
shown here, they being employed in downtown offices and shops
at the time the picture was taken.
Frasier Always Good
Friend to Eastern
Our guest speaker for the In-augural
Ceremony, Dr. George W.
Frasier, president of the Colorado
State College of Education at
Greeley, has been a good friend
to the Eastern Montana Normal
School ever since its foundation
in 1927. Not only has he given his
valuable time to visit Billings and
speak to professional and student
groups but he has been excep-tionally
kind to any of our grad-uates
and former students who
have studied at Greeley.
In fact, the institution at Gree-ley
has been kept in mind here
as a model in working out a
teachers college for eastern Mon-tana.
Conditions are not parallel
in all respects, but Dr. Frasier
did there many of the things we
would like to do here, without in-juring
any other state institution
there or here.
Dr. Frasier's brother, Clark M.
Frasier, member of the faculty of
the Eastern Washington College
of Education, has also enjoyed
popularity with local audiences in
his appearances here.
Gov. Sam C. Ford
Gov. Ford, who, as President of
the State Board of Education, in-stalls
Dr. Peterson as president,
was born at Albany, Ky., in 1882
and received his higher education
at the University of Kansas. He
began the practice of law in Hel-ena
in 1903 and has served as As-sistant
U. S. Attorney for Mon-tana,
Attorney General of Mon-tana,
and as Associate Justice of
the Supreme Court. He was
elected Governor of Montana in
1940 and was reelected in 1944.

State has its own staff photog-rapher,
but the necessary supplies
for carrying on the work have
been difficult to secure. We are
promised early service on these.
Dr. Geo. W. Frasier
Dr. Frasier was born at Mar-lette,
Mich., in 1890, and attended
the Michigan State Normal Col-lege
at Ypsilanti, where he re-ceived
the A.B. degree in 1916.
In 1918 he was awarded the A.M.
degree at Stanford University,
and, in 1922, the doctorate in
philosophy at Columbia Univer-sity.
His honorary degrees are:
Master of Education, Michigan
State Normal College; and Doctor
of Laws, awarded by both Col-orado
College in 1924 and the
University of Colorado in 1927.
He belongs to many national or-ganizations
and is well known as
a writer in professional fields.
George E. Snell
Presiding officer for the Inaug-ural
Ceremony and member of
the general planning committee.
He is a well known Billings at-torney
and a member of the local
Board of Control of the Eastern
Montana Normal School.

Dr. Ernest T. Eaton
Dr. Eaton is Lieut. Governor of
Montana and President of Billings
Polytechnic Institute. For years,
prior to the establishment of the
Eastern Montana Normal School,
Dr. Eaton argued for the creation
of such an institution in Billings
and, through the years of its ex-istence,
has steadfastly promoted
its causes.

Dr. McMullen was the institu-tion's

Luncheon planned for the Com-mercial
Club dining room Mon-day
noon.
Three musical numbers were to
be presented. Floyd Werle was
to play a piano number, Mrs.
Ralph Spitzer was to sing, and the
Elks Quartet was to give balance
to the general program. .
Two hundred fifty persons were
expected to attend this luncheon
by invitation.
LARGE COMMITTEE
LAYS GROUND WORK
A committee of sixty members,
under the general supervision of
Mearl L. Fagg, represented the
Billings Commercial Club in plan-ning
the activities connected with
the inaugural ceremonies.
Among the committees were:
general planning, printing, invi-tations,
publicity, reservations,
courtesy, special tea for ladies'
committee, downtown office serv-ice
and information, window and
street decorations, luncheon dec-oration,
entertainment, reception
and speakers, inauguration proper
and inaugural speakers, reception
after inauguration, refreshments,
entertainment, and thirteen cam-pus
committees on local arrange-ments.
No room here for names, but
each and every member worked
hard and is deserving of great
credit.
With the exception of one or two lean years during the war,
Eastern State has always had a girls' chorus. This year it has
been composed of eleven members under the direction of Miss
Ruth Nourse. The above shot shows them performing before an
assembly of students from the stage of the college auditorium.
Milward W. Simpson
Mr. Simpson, an attorney at
Cody, Wyo., is president of the
Board of Trustees of the Univer-sity
of Wyoming and is represent-ing
the University in our inaug-ural
ceremonies as well as attend-ing
some of the functions correla-tive
thereto.

North Dakota and Wyoming
have both sent us many students

The audience at the Inaugural
Ceremony is asked to remain
seated until the recessional is over
and then to retire to the main
lobby. There, a. group of guides
under the direction of William F.
Hoheisel, will gladly take small
groups over the administration
building.
Meanwhile, t h e gymnasium
floor will be cleared of chairs, a

refreshment table will be pre-pared,
instrumental music will be
begun, and a reception line
formed. When the line is ready,
you will be asked to return to the
gymnasium and meet Dr. and Mrs.
Peterson, members of the State
Board, presidents of our higher
institutions, and out - of - state
guests.
The entire program will be
broadcast over KGHL and your
cooperation to this end will be
greatly appreciated.

Mr. Scott is president of the
State Teachers College at Dickin-son,
No. Dak. He could be with
us but for one day, attending the
Inaugural Luncheon and taking
part in the inaugural ceremony.
He represents the North Dakota
Colleges.

An unusual group among the student body organizations is
known as the "Symphonettes," shown here demonstrating their
art. The symphonette seems to be a cross between a clarinet and
an oboe and is capable of producing some lovely notes when played
by these young ladies.

MISS GREEN WITH US

Green was not available at press
time. Miss Green is, and has been
for some years, secretary to the
Chancellor and is serving as ex-ecutive
secretary to the State
Board of Education. She planned
to be with us and take part in the
inaugural ceremony.
Mearl L. Fagg
Mr. Fagg, as stated elsewhere,
has acted as general chairman of
the committee of sixty working on
the inaugural plans. It has been
his duty to check and double
check to see that everything was
looked after.
The flag bearers for the cere-mony
are Oscar M. Bjorgum, fac-ulty
member fulltime, and Noel
Rigby, a member of the summer
session faculty and alumnus of
the college.

COOPERATE IN WCRK
All faculty members, office staff
and students are helping with the
inaugural proper. Keith Manion,
assisted by 14 men students, has
charge of outside traffic. Dr.
John A. Morton, assisted by six
girl students, is providing check

of issuing the caps, robes and
hoods.
Lincoln J. Aikins was to work
with a reception committee from
the Billings Commercial Club, at

STUDENTS -ALUMNI
HAVE DINNER-DANCE
Invitations were sent to 150
alumni and former students resid-ing
in the vicinity of Billings to
attend t h e Inaugural Dinner-
Dance scheduled for the Northern
Hotel Friday, April 5. The use of
invitations was thought advisable
in order to guarantee reserva-tions,
but any alumnus was wel-come
who would make advance
reservation.
Harlan C. Hines
Dr. Hines is a member of the
faculty at Eastern State. To him
went the responsibility of seeing
that everything was ready in
time, including this pictorial re-view.
Representing the State College
of Utah in the processional is Mr.
Robert D. Neilson, a graduate in
'34 and now a resident of Billings.
Mr. Phillips, U. of California dele-gate,
was out of the city.
A rather dim shot of a scene from "Personal Appearance,"
Broadway comedy staged by the Katoya Players on March 15.
Shown in the picture (left to right) are: Judy Queen, George

Shackleford. The show was hailed as one of, if not the best, on the
local stage.
A fast GI basketball team represented Eastern State during
the winter quarter. The squad, coached by Al Himsl, won six and
